Therapeutic Approaches to Muscle Wasting Disorders

Management of muscle wasting disorders relies on a combination of physical activity, nutritional support, and pharmacological therapy. Resistance and strength training are primary interventions, stimulating muscle protein synthesis and promoting functional recovery. Exercise programs are personalized based on age, disease severity, and comorbidities.

Nutritional interventions focus on adequate protein intake, essential amino acids, and micronutrients like vitamin D, calcium, and omega-3 fatty acids. Protein supplementation is particularly effective in elderly patients and those with chronic illnesses, enhancing muscle regeneration.

Pharmacological therapies target pathways involved in muscle atrophy. Myostatin inhibitors, selective androgen receptor modulators (SARMs), and anabolic hormones are under investigation for their ability to stimulate muscle growth and prevent catabolic processes. Anti-inflammatory agents may also help reduce muscle breakdown in chronic diseases.

Combination therapy—integrating exercise, nutrition, and medication—offers the most promising outcomes. Multidisciplinary care plans allow healthcare providers to tailor interventions to the individual, maximizing improvements in muscle mass, strength, and mobility.
